Background of the Study
Access to clean and sustainable water is critical for public health and economic development. In Dambatta Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, water scarcity and the sustainability of existing water projects remain pressing challenges. Development communication serves as a vital tool in promoting water project sustainability by facilitating stakeholder engagement, educating communities on water conservation, and ensuring accountability. Studies reveal that participatory communication approaches, including community dialogues and awareness campaigns, significantly enhance the sustainability of water projects in rural areas (Abdullahi et al., 2023). This study examines the role of development communication in ensuring the sustainability of water projects in Dambatta LGA, highlighting best practices and challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite numerous water projects implemented in Dambatta LGA, many have failed to achieve long-term sustainability due to poor maintenance, lack of community ownership, and inadequate stakeholder engagement. Effective development communication can address these challenges by fostering collaboration, improving awareness, and promoting behavioral change. However, its application in water project sustainability in Dambatta LGA is limited (Garba et al., 2024). This study explores how development communication can enhance water project sustainability in the area.
